Pronunciation of b and v |
|
Let's work on the sounds "b" and "v", which are two distinct sounds with physical differences in their pronunciation that can be difficult for ESL students. It's helpful to practice the correct positioning of your mouth and tongue, and working in front of a mirror, as you work on these sounds.
The "b" sound is made by pressing your upper and lower lips gently together. The tongue is relaxed. (If you press too tightly you'll make a "p" sound instead.)
Now practice these words: bed, bee, book, blue, amber, able, tub, cube
The "v" sound is created by placing your top front teeth gently on your lower lip, and then blowing air lightly toward the teeth. The tongue is relaxed. (Again, it's important not to press too tightly or you'll make the "f" sound)
Now try some words: vine, violin, valentine, vault, five, seven, government
Are you ready for a bigger challenge? Try to say these words correctly. They contain both sounds:
Beverly, vibrate, bovine, bee hive, Bavaria
After practicing for awhile, you'll find that you can make these sounds without having to think about the pronunciation process.
